EDITORS NOTES:
Venue – The Old Mill
The area down by the canal in Leicester is full of history and Elvis, its owner, is keen to see it put to good use. Elvis Hughes bought a warehouse venue, with 2 indoor rooms, and a large courtyard space outside. Entering off the main road (Frog Island, Leicester), a road runs down the side of the canal, lit by traditional lamps. After passing the parking area, the road opens up into a courtyard. The Old Mill is located on the opposite side of the courtyard. The main room is large, with a stage and balcony area, and a decent sized bar. From the balcony a staircase takes you to the 2nd room; an intimate lounge space for chilling out.
Aim of the event
Vijay Patel of UKURBANCULTURE said “This event is very much the trigger to developing something much larger in the urban scene”. They seek to get a commitment from some of the attending artists to join a UK collective currently being formed. UKURBANCULTURE will propose joining a collective consisting of graffiti writers, break dancers, DJ’s, producers, organizers and hosts in order to take part in an event exchange with another country.
The proposal involves meeting quarterly, as a collective, for a private jam. It also involves organizing a major event, once a year, that gives the artists some exposure, earns them some money and really sets the tone of the UK standard, for our public and that of other countries to see. If the exchange is a success, they have plans to take it to a variety of countries around the world starting with France.
We also aim to raise the profile of a very good venue that ties closely with our image and ideals and is going to be used for various future ventures.

About us
UKURBANCULTURE offers a stage that seeks to unite those who share a passion for the urban lifestyle. We aim to create a community that both represents and promotes a healthy urban culture. Their web portal (coming soon) will provide the lowdown on the latest music, info on current and future events and further information that shares the tastes and attitude of the urban community. They also offer the opportunity for people to contribute creatively, openly discuss the word on the street and to join an urban movement.
UKURBANCULTURE is a collective of individuals who started out as general consumers of urban culture with a passion for art, clothing, dance and music, its four core elements. Wanting to be a part of that culture and make a contribution of their own, they decided to form an organization.
In addition to their website UKURBANCULTURE currently organizes various events in Leicester showcasing the core elements of urban culture and plans to host workshops, teaching the skills and trends endemic to these elements.
